Wildlife Watching

Bald eagles, wild burros, osprey & more

Lake Pleasant and the Agua Fria River canyon are home to an extraordinary variety of Sonoran Desert wildlife. Bald eagles nest along the canyon walls from November through March. Great blue herons, osprey, cormorants, and dozens of migratory bird species are common year-round. Wild burros roam the shoreline, and mule deer are frequently spotted at dusk. A jet boat tour puts you deep inside the canyon where wildlife concentrations are highest.

The canyon walls are inaccessible by foot — the only way to reach the prime wildlife habitat is by boat. Our guides know exactly where to slow down and where to look.

Canyon Scenery & Geology

Accessible only by boat

The Agua Fria River arm of Lake Pleasant cuts through ancient volcanic rock, forming dramatic canyon walls that rise hundreds of feet above the water. The tour passes the ruins of the original Waddell Dam — a piece of Arizona history submerged when the new dam was built — and ventures into remote stretches of canyon that are only accessible by boat. It's a side of the Sonoran Desert that most Phoenix visitors never see.

The canyon geology tells 1.7 billion years of Arizona history. Layers of basalt, rhyolite, and ancient lakebed sediment are visible in the walls as you travel upstream — a natural timeline carved by the Agua Fria River over millions of years.

Highlights Along the Route

Original Waddell Dam ruins — submerged Arizona history
200-foot volcanic canyon walls on the Agua Fria arm
Humbug Creek confluence — remote desert canyon
Ancient lakebed geology visible in the cliff faces
No road access — only reachable by boat
Dramatic light in the canyon at morning departures

Winter & Spring Outdoor Adventure

Open Nov–May when others are closed

Phoenix winters are legendary for outdoor recreation, but most water activities shut down when temperatures drop. Not at Lake Pleasant. AZ Jet Boat runs November through May — precisely the season when the weather is perfect for being on the water. While summer tubing and kayaking operations close for the heat, we're just getting started. It's one of the best outdoor activities in Phoenix during the winter months.

November through February temperatures at Lake Pleasant typically range from the mid-50s to low 70s — cool enough to be comfortable on the water, warm enough to enjoy the open canyon. Dress in layers; it can be brisk at speed on the boat.
